What is the East Texas Beekeepers Association, Inc.?
It is an organization of beekeepers (mostly hobbyists) from the East Texas area.
What does the ETBA do?
- Publishes a helpful and informative monthly newsletter
- Provides an opportunity to hear presentations by leading individuals in beekeeping and related areas each month
- Provides access to an extensive and up-
to- date video library - Provides hands on experience in workshops and classes taught by experienced beekeepers
- Provides the opportunity for one-
on- one discussions with any of our veteran beekeepers (many of which are willing to mentor less experienced beekeepers on their own time) - Provides access to the latest scientific and political data effecting bees and beekeeping
- Maintains a website containing information important to the beekeeper
- Sponsors educational programs such as the large scale observation hives at Texas Eastman Nature Preserve, Stephen F. Austin State University, The Science Discovery Place in Tyler and the Texas Freshwater Fish Hatcheries in Athens, TX. Many members serve personally by presenting educational talks to classrooms at East Texas and local organizations.
- Participates in educational events such as the Agricultural education program at the East Texas State Fair.
- Offers fun, food and fellowship at each of our monthly meetings.
The main purpose of the ETBA is to educate.
You can see our booth annually at the state fair.
We have observation hives (as pictured above) that kids of all ages like to see. We discuss honeybees and their impact on the environment.
Our educational programs are designed for improved promotion, production, and marketing of bees and bee products and services for hobbyist beekeepers in East Texas. We also share information to the general public as to the importance of honeybees and beekeeping activities in the continued production of various foods in the United States and in the world.
The public is always invited to join us and learn about honeybees and their importance in our world. We offer the opportunity to meet beekeepers of all ages, hear knowledgable guest speakers, and join in family friendly activities. Snacks are served at each meeting,
The ETBA offers a variety of educational and mentoring opportunities.
TAMU Honey Bee Lab
The Department of Entomology at Texas A&M University and the Texas Beekeepers Association formed a successful partnership to establish a honey bee research program. The initiation of the honey bee biology program addresses the department’s vision of excellence in teaching, research, and outreach education by providing students and the community an opportunity to study the fascinating social structure, behavior and culture of bees.
The program activities are to conduct critical basic and applied honey bee research. Targeted areas include pollination biology in agricultural and natural landscapes, mechanisms of disease and parasite resistance, and the distribution and frequency of Africanized honey bee genes in Texas. The goals of the program are to contribute new knowledge, tools and, solutions that will sustain, expand, and enhance the beekeeping industry, natural and urban landscapes and, strengthen the educational environment in Texas.
